Tour Saihō-ji (Moss Temple), a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Tour Saihō-ji (Moss Temple), a UNESCO World Heritage Site Amazing temple famous for its exquisite moss garden; the ~2 hour experience allows one to get immersed in its serene zen aesthetic, and during the autumn season when I went the colours of the autumn foliage made for a nice contrast with the lush greens of the many moss varieties. Tokie was very helpful with handling admin issues and my guide on the day Yoko was knowledgeable and accommodating. Definitely a must do for anyone interested in Japanese history or culture, or Kyoto specifically.

Exclusive Private Ryoanji Temple Insider Tour

Exclusive Private Ryoanji Temple Insider Tour I have been to Ryoanji Temple many times, but this time on a guided tour, I gained a new appreciation for it. As a person who never really thinks about history, learning about Ryoanji’s past and the background really helped me to feel the history of the place. I lost count the number of times a said “wow”! It was a very special experience, one that I wholeheartedly recommend for others, looking for a new way to appreciate Kyoto.

Exclusive Private Ryoanji Temple Insider Tour

Exclusive Private Ryoanji Temple Insider Tour I have been to Ryoanji several times in my 15years in Japan. I have always enjoyed it; it is beautiful and very peaceful. I never thought about it in any other terms, that is until my last visit! We met a guide, from the temple who proceeded to show us around the more restricted areas and explain about the history and relevance of certain pieces of art. To say it was interesting is something of an understatement. I love history, so to hear about when and how Ryoanji started was an eye opener for me. And, more pertinent, was the explanation of the temple, which is usually off limits to tourists. Whenever I have visited Ryoanji in the past, I merely thought of it as a rock garden and little more. It is easy to overlook the fact that it is first and foremost a temple; a place of worship. Upon entering the temple section of the building, I was immediately filled with a sense of awe. I am not a religious person, however it was hard not to be moved by what we saw. Lining the walls on the passage way to the ‘altar’ for want of a better word, were the memorials for past temple parishioners. The way they had been memorialized was quite moving. This was a place if deep, intimate meaning for the locals, and it is easy to overlook this as a regular tourist. It was an honor and a privilege to be privy to such an important place, and for anyone with an appreciation of history and culture, it will be well worth the visit.

Make your own Samurai Knife with a Certified Swordsmith!

Make your own Samurai Knife with a Certified Swordsmith! My husband and I both participated in a session with Taro making our own knives. The experience was absolutely amazing as we actually got to participate in all steps of the knife making/forging process. Taro was so helpful in explaining the techniques we should use for each step and provided perfect guidance along the way. His hospitality throughout the entire experience was amazing and I cannot recommend this experience enough.

Make your own Samurai Knife with a Certified Swordsmith!

Make your own Samurai Knife with a Certified Swordsmith! Making knives with Taro-san and his apprentices was a dream come true! Getting a chance to work alongside a master (and to see how amazing his skills are) is a rare opportunity. We made our own knives, as Taro-san quietly and patiently guided us through the process. It is well worth the trip out. Ask him about his philosophy - and how he is modernizing the world of sword making.

You can see more of his studio's and visiting students' work on Instagram with the hashtag: #kniveswithtaro. Check it out!

Note: We came from Osaka (~2 hours by car/train) and it was so worth it.

Buy Suica Card—Japan's Most Convenient Prepaid E-Money Card

Buy Suica Card—Japan's Most Convenient Prepaid E-Money Card Picked this up at the airport after exiting arrivals restricted area. Just outside the gate at one of the counters nearby, easy to find following the instructions. Once you get the card, you just need to top it up at one of the ticket machines outside of any train station gate. All machines have English option so you can understand the steps very easy. It's pretty expensive to transit on JR and metro lines in Japan, so for 14 days I added a total of 12800 yen to the card and literally used it all. So make sure you include a transit amount in your budget if you get this card. But if you don't travel between stations a lot then you'll probably use it less. We walked mostly in Osaka, but traveled between stations a lot in Tokyo.
