Isle of Incredible Views

The warm waters of the Kuroshio Current flow around Hachijojima, bringing year-round opportunities for great snorkeling and diving amongst the island's incredible underwater visitors. Hachijo-Fuji, the island's iconic volcano, rewards hikers with sublime panoramic views of the open ocean and the surrounding volcanic landscape. Below the mountain peaks, the enchanting tree fern forests, hidden waterfalls, and numerous hot springs of the island are just a few more of the natural wonders that await you. Besides outdoor adventures, Hachijojima boasts a distinctive food and craft culture. The hospitable locals will eagerly teach you how to make 'island sushi', pick and prepare fresh mountain herbs, or dress in a Kihachijo silk kimono.

Transport

Hachijojima is the most convenient of the Izu Islands from Tokyo, with three direct flights a day from Haneda Airport, as well as the overnight ferry departing from Takeshiba Pier. Flying takes under an hour, making the island an easy side trip from the city, with the 10-hour-long ferry also stopping at Miyakejima and Mikurashima – ideal for island hopping adventures on your way to or from Hachijojima. Once on the island, a rental car or bicycle gives the best convenience and is highly recommended. Local buses do connect the main sightseeing spots, and the 2-day 'Buspa' bus pass includes free entry to four of the best hot springs if you choose this option, sold at the bus station for 1,000 yen. Complimentary pick-up service is offered by some but not all accommodations and activity operators.
