    Japanese Traditional Mounted Archery Yabusame

Japanese Traditional Mounted Archery Yabusame The three of us (adults) did this activity and were so happy we did! We also paid the extra yen for the costume and we all felt it was definitely worth it. The property the horses are on is beautiful, and the track is set up at the same place the annual Yabusame competition is held, so you know you’re getting the proper and authentic experience. Our tour guides spoke great English and took awesome pictures of us on all phases of the training. The training was very clear and concise. The owner of the property trained us along with his guides and it was a sight seeing him perform archery. We went from not knowing what we were doing at all to performing archery on a gorgeous horse (Clydesdale, I think?)
We own a ranch back in the states, so we want to now set up a Yabusame track. Don’t miss out on this experience, it’s worth every cent / penny / yen ;)

    Japanese Traditional Mounted Archery Yabusame

Japanese Traditional Mounted Archery Yabusame I had a great day learning Yabusame. I did the three hour class as I thought it would be good to consolidate my skills and I do not regret it at all. The Kawakami family were very friendly and made me feel part of their family and Tomo speaks great English, and as others have said here, could replace the interpreter. However I was glad the interpreter came with me to take the stress off navigating the train system (which with a bit of prep time I could have managed). This was my first time and I was glad with the trainers' support to make some progress. It was very relaxed compared to the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. There was only me there and I was a bit wary of being in the middle of nowhere on an active farm but that soon changed. I was asked if I wanted to rent the traditional costume but didn't have enough cash on me (hadn't yet worked out Tokyo's ATM system) but kind of thought it would have been great for the photos. They were very patient with me as I learned how to shoot the arrow and then put the action onto a horse. I had great fun and was buzzing for many days. I have traveled a lot through Japan and many times and I must say that learning Yabusame with this family is one of my highlights. I will definitely book to do this again next time I am in Japan.

Explore a traditional old town near Tokyo

Explore a traditional old town near Tokyo Having just arrived in Tokyo I was looking for a tour that would deviate from the usual, and I would get to see another side of Japan. Shumi's tour began with an easy pick up in the morning and then a 2 hour drive out to Ibaraki with some nice stops along the way and a chance to a explore beautiful old town. The indigo dye was fascintating - an old tradition in Ibaraki. We were able to dye our own cloth and keep it as a souvenir. Shumi had arranged a fantastic lunch and afterwards to an old sake brewery, and one of the most important in the area. I see sake in a different light now after the brewery tour, and the tasting of a variety of sakes. The tour of Ibaraki ended with a visit to a beautiful hilltop shrine that overlooked Ibaraki and, in the distance, Tokyo. With a sunset that enhanced all kinds of love feelings for Japan it was a great way to finish the tour with Shumi. He's a wonderful guide! A local with a passion for the area. I would recommend to anyone.
