JR Pass – 7, 14, or 21 Days Unlimited Rail Travel in Japan

JR Pass – 7, 14, or 21 Days Unlimited Rail Travel in Japan We got our passes mailed to our US address and went to the Ueno station office to exchange it. Despite the Rugby fans in Japan, I got lucky that there were just two customers ahead of me in the line to get the real JR Pass. Per the travel book's suggestion, plan the days ahead, hence, the staff was able to give us our real cards, pre-booked our trips to Hiroshima from Kyoto, Kyoto to Narita. It's way nicer to travel on reserved seats as the non-reserved seats get filled up quickly. Overall, it was easy getting and out of the stations, conductors are very respectful (and make the train leave on time), Shinkansen trains are spotless!

JR East Pass Nagano & Niigata Area – Flexible 5 Day Pass

JR East Pass Nagano & Niigata Area – Flexible 5 Day Pass I was only in Japan for four days or so but knew that on one of those days I'd be heading out to Nagano prefecture to visit a fairly obscure car museum there. Getting a full JR pass didn't make sense but the cheaper JR East Pass was a perfect fit. It was super easy to pick up at the JR East office in Haneda Airport on my arrival and then just as easy to use for arranging my train rides. Station staff were very helpful in reserving seats for me on the Chuo Line Limited Express to get to Okaya where the museum was then another train on to Nagano City where I grabbed the Shinkansen back to Tokyo, fulfilling a desire I'd had for a long time to ride a bullet train. Of course it was also useful when hopping on and off the Yamanote Line in Tokyo and the Keihin-Tohoku line when I headed to Yokohama as well. I just wish I'd had an extra day on my Japan trip to explore Niigata as well.
