Looking for things to do in Hokkaido’s Noboribetsu other than hitting the town’s soothing hot springs? Visit Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe, home to around 400 different varieties of aquatic creatures, totaling over 20,000 inhabitants! With an exterior that’s modeled after a quaint Danish castle, the park’s main draws are its shows and colorful, photogenic exhibitions. Watch shows featuring friendly sea lions, fur seals, and dolphins — or, see a parade of penguins waddling around. A few times a day, you can also catch these adorable animals during their feeding times! Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe’s exhibitions of fish and other underwater animals aren’t like what you’d see at a typical aquarium — there’s a reason the park is called a “castle under the sea”! A walk through the Aqua Tunnel, a glass-domed walkway, will truly make you feel like you’re in an underwater castle. In the “Kaleidoscope of Goldfish,” watch goldfish swim in brightly lit domes, as mirrors all over the room reflect this colorful sight. See sardines in search of food sparkle like stars at the Milky Way Pool, an illuminated tank full of 10,000 sardines. The aquarium also houses Hokkaido’s largest jellyfish tank, as well as a reptile and amphibian house for those who prefer scaly, slimy creatures like anacondas, tortoises, and frogs. If watching animals isn’t enough for you, there’s also an amusement park on Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe’s grounds, which visitors can enjoy for a separate fee of 100 JPY per ride.
