Wara village is hidden deep in a mountain valley between Gero and Gujo cities in Gifu prefecture. Here you will not only be able to discover nostalgic images of rural landscape with plenty of rice paddies and corn fields, but you will also see how local people in Japan live their ordinary lives. This will be a unique experience from your trip to Japan!
Wara is known for its rivers and freshwater activities. Wara is home to the protected giant salamanders that can be easily seen in the water in August. But more than anything else, Wara is known for the Ayu sweetfish. Plenty of Japanese people come from far away to experience sweetfish fishing and to taste the delicious fish after grilling it on fire with salt. This is exactly the activity that you will try in Wara!
Period of the activity: Only between June 15 and August 15
You will be given rental equipment for sweetfish fishing. After fishing, you will be join local people in grilling the fish with salt on fire and eat it!
This activity lasts about 3 hours and starts at 10:00 or at 13:00.
Note: For an additional 2000 JPY local people can prepare a delicious lunch for you!
You can reach Wara village by bus from Gujo city. Alternatively, you can reach it by changing two buses from Hida-Kanayama village as well.
Wara Okoshi Kominkan
The activity may be cancelled in case of stormy weather, flooding rivers or water shortage (consistent dry weather).
Please understand that catching sweetfish is not guaranteed. You will not be refunded even if you do not catch sweetfish during the activity.
