JR Pass – 7, 14, or 21 Days Unlimited Rail Travel in Japan

JR Pass – 7, 14, or 21 Days Unlimited Rail Travel in Japan We made very good use of our 14 day JR passes and travelled all throughout mainland Japan. Tokyo, Fuji, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Miyajama Island boat and Kanazawa plus other local routes that have JR. For some routes on the shinkansen it is worth booking a seat as you may end up standing for long periods until someone gets off. Its a must have if you want to travel throughout Japan.

JR Pass – 7, 14, or 21 Days Unlimited Rail Travel in Japan

JR Pass – 7, 14, or 21 Days Unlimited Rail Travel in Japan We loved our JR Rail pass. Be sure to get it only for the number of days that you will be traveling by bullet train in Japan. Japan has several local train systems (the subway lines) and other bullet train lines— the JR Rail pass covers unlimited bullet trail service to destinations on the JR line (Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Tokyo, Narita Airport, and more). We got a 7 day pass because 7 days we were traveling between the Narita Airport, Tokyo, Osaka, Nara and Kyoto. So glad we did this. It was easy to exchange the voucher (mailed to us in the US) in Japan to ride the Narita Express. We didn't book any reserve seats at the train station (which you can do in advance once you have your JR pass), but we were able to get a seat next to each other for every bullet train trip by arriving early before the train arrives and lining up next to the cars where you don't need a reservation. Awesome deal, and much cheaper and easier than paying for each individual ticket.

JR Pass – 7, 14, or 21 Days Unlimited Rail Travel in Japan

JR Pass – 7, 14, or 21 Days Unlimited Rail Travel in Japan We got our passes mailed to our US address and went to the Ueno station office to exchange it. Despite the Rugby fans in Japan, I got lucky that there were just two customers ahead of me in the line to get the real JR Pass. Per the travel book's suggestion, plan the days ahead, hence, the staff was able to give us our real cards, pre-booked our trips to Hiroshima from Kyoto, Kyoto to Narita. It's way nicer to travel on reserved seats as the non-reserved seats get filled up quickly. Overall, it was easy getting and out of the stations, conductors are very respectful (and make the train leave on time), Shinkansen trains are spotless!
