Watch Early Morning Sumo Training in Tokyo at a Sumo Stable

Watch Early Morning Sumo Training in Tokyo at a Sumo Stable This was a top highlight of our Japan trip. We originally were trying to get into the sumo tournament, but all tickets were sold out. We found this instead and this was so much better! We had front row seats to almost two hours of sumo wrestling! Our guide was amazing. So friendly and helpful every step of the way. We learned a lot and got a lot of pictures and videos. Apparently they don't always allow picture and video, but we got lucky. I highly recommend this activity. You won't regret the cost or waking up early to go there!

Watch Early Morning Sumo Training in Tokyo at a Sumo Stable

Watch Early Morning Sumo Training in Tokyo at a Sumo Stable What better way to experience Japan than to immerse directly into the culture itself. Instead of the conventional shopping around Tokyo, we'd arranged for this and the host Yeonmi had made this experience so enjoyable.

Coordination was a breeze. We had "front row seats" and could literally feel the sumo's wrestlers' sweat. Yes, we were that close. And from there we saw the wrestlers' dedication and perseverance and experienced a different side of Japan.

And to top it all off, a photo with the sumo wrestlers for memory. Just wonderful :)

Duel with sumo wrestlers and eat chanko nabe in Asakusa show

Duel with sumo wrestlers and eat chanko nabe in Asakusa show My husband and I hadn't ever gotten to see a sumo tournament in person, but we still wanted some sumo action! This was one of my favorite things I've ever done in three in a half years of living in Japan. Everything is explained in perfect English and the demonstration is the perfect mix of silly and "Oh my goodness, these guys are no joke!" The rules of sumo were explained, which I would not have known otherwise, so now when I see it on TV I can understand what's going on! My husband and I both put on suits and duelled with the wrestlers, who humored us and were incredibly good natured. The two wrestlers were retired from sumo and participated in serving us chanko-nabe, which was delicious and I GLADLY took seconds. They answered our many questions and were a delight to meet. The proprietor is also a retired sumo wrestler, if I understand correctly.

Definitely one of the coolest experiences ever! Don't miss it!

Watch Early Morning Sumo Training in Tokyo at a Sumo Stable

Watch Early Morning Sumo Training in Tokyo at a Sumo Stable Our tour guide, Kiyo, met us and gave us some background on what the training would be like and how to respectfully watch the sumo wrestlers. It was quite an experience to watch them train and do head to head drills. After a few hours of their training, we were able to take a group picture with some of our favorite wrestlers. Very cool! Highly recommend! Thanks to Kiyo for walking us into the stable and answering the questions we had!
