My name is Penelope, and I am a professional chef. A spark inside me was ignited when I went traveling through Asia in the late 1980‘s, little did I know the spark would lead me to where I live today.
After a four-year apprenticeship at the Savoy hotel in London, I spent 12 years in Sydney working in cutting edge restaurants, followed by a three-year posting as Executive Chef at the Alila Manggis hotel East Bali.

During my time at Alila I fell in love with the Balinese culture, the amazing freshness and vitality of the produce available at my door step and the way the Balinese work with it to create a unique tapestry of flavours.
I now run my own restaurant Bali Asli, where we teach visitors from all around the world about authentic Balinese cuisine; so come visit us and you too can experience a culinary adventure like no other!

A day in the life of a Balinese lady

A day in the life of a Balinese lady What a beautiful day we spent with Penny and her staff at Bali Asli. They worked with us to create a unique 'race' experience for our family - a scavenger hunt on the drive to Bali Asli, a search through the market for unique items, and a race to eat Durian and balance baskets on our heads at the end. In between all of this fun, we relaxed and learned a lot about Bali culture, practiced making canang, and made a full Balinese lunch that had us happily stuffed at the end - delicious.
It is certainly worth the trip from Ubud or the beaches to get away from the craziness and relax in the mountains. And the Voyagin staff were very helpful throughout - thank you!
