Description

Japan is made up of over 6,000 islands, with people inhabiting well over 400 hundred of them. Each of these islands has their own unique and original culture which to this day still goes largely undiscovered by most Japanese. For this particular workshop we'll be focusing on the traditional art of Amami Island, which involves the creation of natural dyes derived from mud and plants which can then be used to dye any number of cloths and patterns. Mentioned in the title of the workshop, "oshima-tsumugi" refers to traditional silks woven and dyed using these carefully crafted dyes, a beautifully refined craft which originated in the Amami Islands. For this special session, you'll have the opportunity take part in a hands-on workshop together with an "oshima-tsumugi" craftsman and a selection of unique dyes shipped up directly from the main island. We're looking forward to having you join us for this unique, one-time-only workshop – a chance to experience Japan's colorful island culture right here in the big city! *Brought to you in cooperation with International TERAKOYA, where the world meets Japan's fantastic rural cultures and people in the heart of Tokyo!
