Tour leader Colm, from Dublin, Ireland, has over twenty years experience working as a professional photographer. He studied under Magnum photographer David Hurn at the School of Documentary Photography in Newport, Wales, and after that moved to Paris to work freelance, where he lived for fifteen years. His pictures have featured in numerous publications worldwide, including The Guardian (UK), Le Point (France), LA Times (USA), and The Nation (Vietnam). He moved to Hanoi in 2008, and is a strong speaker of Vietnamese, as well as having fluency in French and English.
Organiser Alex Sheal has spent the majority of the past ten years travelling and working in Asia. He has an MA in Literature and Creative Writing, and his travel-based short stories have won international awards including the New Writer Novella Prize and the David Higham Award, and featured in UK magazines such as Litro, 3:am, Untitled Books, and The New Writer. His articles about living and traveling in Vietnam have featured regularly in VOV News, and he was the editor of Peace House Shelter: Survivors of Trafficking in their Own Words, a book recently published by the Spanish NGO, AECID.
Alex moved to Hanoi in 2007, and is a graduate of Hanoi National University’s Vietnamese Language and Culture program, during which he focused on the ethnic cultures of the north. His travels over the past five years have taken him on the most intrepid journeys Vietnam has to offer, from the remote northern provinces, to the Ho Chi Minh Trail, and the Mekong Delta. He is fluent in Vietnamese and has appeared on VTV many times to discuss topics as various as Tet, Ethnic Minority Love Markets and travel in Vietnam.
