Experience the majesty of the animal kingdom like never before at the multi award-winning Singapore Zoo. Also known as Singapore Zoological Gardens or Mandai Zoo, this sprawling 64-acre wildlife park is famously one of the world’s first open concept zoos which adopts a no-cage policy. The zoo is meticulously designed to provide modern, natural animal enclosures that replicate the natural environments of the animals it holds in captivity.
Now in its 4th decade, the Singapore Zoo has attained a strong reputation internationally for its conservation initiatives and breeding programs that had led to the birth of endangered species such as the extremely rare proboscis monkeys, highly endangered douc langurs, African white rhino and many others.
The Singapore Zoo is truly a world of wonder with an enlightening journey to the grassy plains of Africa, the tropical rainforests of Asia, the expansive grasslands of the African bush, the foothills of the Himalayas, Southeast Asia’s steamy rainforests and the frozen tundra of the Arctic.
The best way to explore the Singapore Zoo is to hop aboard the Singapore Zoo tram for a 2.2km meandering journey through these diverse landscapes and faithfully recreated animal habitats, and get a deeper understanding of the animal world with enlightening audio commentary. Be enthralled by close up glimpses of fearsome predators and lovable small critters. Stopping at several stations around the park, you can hop off for a more detailed look and hop on again to continue exploring the numerous engaging exhibits and different animal zones.
Singapore Zoo’s specially created habitat zone highlights include:
Fashioned to recreate the wide open grassy savannah of the African continent, graceful giraffes stand tall while zebras, warthogs and the king of the jungle paws the grassy plains. Get up close and be charmed by the always entertaining colony of meerkats. The adjacent big cat enclosure showcases an array of ferocious felines including speedy cheetahs, jaguars, leopards and of course the mane attraction – the African Lion.
Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia
This award winning themed land depicts the natural phenomenon of East Africa’s Great Rift Valley, complete with faithfully recreated tribal villages amid rugged terrain and waterfalls. The main attraction here is the troupe of energetic Hamadryas baboons, which like to show off their athletic prowess by performing handstands and somersaults! Watch out for the ultra competitive Nubian Ibex mountain goats where males lock horns to assert their authority on the herd and the cute Banded Mongoose.
Step inside a huge temperature controlled biodome and explore the hidden world of a tropical rainforest. Marvel at the sheer diversity of this intricately balanced ecosystem including the graceful flight of tropical butterflies, crowned pigeons and lemurs high above the forest canopy. There is a dizzying array of flora and fauna to admire, all designed to educate and engage visitors on the planet’s fragile ecosystems.
A big draw at Singapore Zoo is the incredible antics you will witness at Primate Kingdom, where these frisky, yet intelligent mammals never cease to fascinate with their manic behaviour. With the world’s first free ranging orangutan habitat and the most successful orangutan breeding program, the Singapore Zoo’s primate kingdom is its flagship zone. Younger visitors will be enthralled by the ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ speed and athleticism of the Patas Monkey or the bashful, yet vibrantly coloured Vietnamese Douc Langur primate.
Take a trip Down Under and meet classically Aussie kangaroos and wallabies in this recreation of the Australian Wilderness. Originally conceptualised in collaboration with the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, the Australian Zone is a must-see during your visit.
Cool off at the Frozen Tundra - an exhibit that resembles the arctic habitat including an ice cave with a waterfall and splash pool. The cave is home to Inuka - the world’s first polar bear to be born in tropics, raccoon dogs from Japan and fearless wolverines.
Get closer to nature with a journey through the forest canopy. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty of the lush tropical rainforest, a sun-drenched jungle pond and a cascading waterfall as you walk this gorgeous pathway.
Keep your eyes and ears peeled for the red-ruffed lemur, the white-handed gibbon, the agile gibbon, the black howler monkey and the greater flamingo on Gibbon Island.
If you prefer animals of the cold-blooded variety, drop by the reptile garden to meet our Komodo dragons, giant tortoises and wide variety of snakes - the legendary mighty reticulated python, rattlesnakes and anacondas.
Yet to be opened, this shell-ter promises a wide variety of tortoises and other slow-but-steady reptiles.
