Description
Aokigahara Jukai, "the sea of trees," sits at the foot of Mt. Fuji atop the lava that flowed from Mt. Fuji in 864 (the great Jougan era eruption). The forest spans about 3,000 hectares but the soil is thin and the roots of the trees grow horizontally seeking nutrition. It is also a highly unusual in that it is made up primarily of hemlock fir, Japanese cypress, and other evergreen needle-leaf trees, plus broadleaves like longstalk holly, oak, Fuji cherry, and maple.
