Would have never known quality of items if not for my guide!

I had 3 tours this last trip to japan. This by far was the best. I am a chef and wanted to know what the the 500+ kinds of seafood at tsukiji inner market were. So interesting! Our guide was Yukio Akashi. He accommodated us at last minute although it was peak time and most tours were booked. He was awesome and lived in the US for so long so he was very fluent in english. At the outer market, our guide translated to my friend and I what the sellers were saying and he helped get the best prices for us. I see from my friends who didn't have a guide, they didn't know what to get at Tsukiji without a guide... Our guide explained what the sellers were saying and which was what quality was a major PLUS for me.
I am liking voyagin since while the tours has no set meal like other tours fro other tour companies, you get to choose what to eat AND they try to follow up and accommodate you with a guide although peak season! In my 4th trip to Japan I will make sure to take voyagin and if at tokyo, ask for yukio-san.

Tsukiji was great, despite disappointing tour guide

Tsukiji itself is a unique, 5-star experience. You'll see thousands of kinds of fish and seafood, and immerse yourself into the inner workings of one of the most amazing destinations in Tokyo.

The 2-star rating is for our guide, Setsuko Kawaguchi. She was a very nice woman and kept us from getting lost. But the tour she provided was disappointing. She barely talked and didn't seem to know much about the history or details of Tsukiji itself. When we asked questions, she often times did not know the answers. When we asked for recommendations for sushi restaurants nearby, she could not point to any in particular. She kept showing us shops selling cheap souvenirs, rather than provide interesting information about the market. Her English was average to mediocre. I speak Japanese and was more than willing to translate. But even in Japanese, she provided minimal information.

From previous reviews, it seems like Voyagin has other Tsukiji tour guides who are very good. Unfortunately, Setsuko-san was not one of them.

    Fun and informative!

We had Yumiko as our guide and she was great. She was able to tell us about the history of the market, then showed us around and showed us what everything was. We even got to see an entire tuna being sawed into pieces! She showed us around the fish and vegetable markets, showed us how to pray at a shrine and then recommended a sushi restaurant for us to eat at. Overall great experience!

    Great guide!

Our tour was excellent. Took us all thru the both parts of the market and answered all of our questions. Was super helpful, highly recommend!

Interesting to see, but not welcoming

The Tsukiji Fish market is featured in all tourist guides of Japan. While interesting to see and experience directly, it is important that tourists realize they are not really welcome by market workers (I can't blame them). We arrived at the market at 9 am, and while walking around, a very rude and dismissive attitude from market workers (totally different experience from my overall experience with Japanese people). One particular individual almost pushed my girlfriend aside for taking a picture. I suggest anyone who goes is prepared to feel unwelcome, which is quite the opposite of all other experiences I had in Japan.

The outer market is another story, as the streets are lined with shops and food stands which I thoroughly enjoyed. My comment above is related to the main market only.

The actual market is closing in November of 2016, with tourist visits to be limited to a viewing gallery. I guess this will solve the issue. Until then, I am not in a position to recommend a visit to the fish market.

    Great experience

Great visit with Chiba san, he took us everywhere, explained a lot, the market is an amazing place so are the little streets around where you can shop and eat.

    Fun and Informative

Great walking tour with Mr. Murata, who subbed for Satoko. He was thoughtful, smart, determined to get through the crowds, and even offered to show us the cherry blossoms around town after we finished the tour. His kindness was much appreciated. We enjoyed his company very much.

Relaxed, informative morning in the bustling Tsukiji Market.

We loved our morning in the fish market with Yumiko. I would highly recommend her to be your guide! She picked us up perfectly on time, and spent several generous hours with us in the market. We saw so much! I never felt rushed, and she explained so much about the market that I would have surely missed if I hadn't had a guide. She made great recommendations for shopping and eating as well.
