In 1957 Koenji, a local quiet area in Western Tokyo, introduced Awa-Odori dances as their summer festival in order to attract more visitors and customers to the local shops. This resulted in quick popularity of Koenji area and nowadays the annually held festival welcomes more than 10 000 performers and over 1 million spectators from all over the world! In 2016 the Koenji Awa-Odori festival celebrates its 60th edition and for the first time in its history special spectator seats will be allocated for foreign guests of Tokyo!
The festival is held over 8 different stages along the boulevards and shopping arcades around Koenji Station. In 2016 the festival will take place on August 27-28, from 17:00 to 20:00. In recent years there is an increasing number of foreign performers in the dancing groups so this festival acts as a bridge between different cultures. Don't miss your chance to get a seat ticket for the special spectator area and enjoy one of the best summer festivals in Tokyo!
