I have never tried suminagashi before, and only seen marbling demonstrated (which it is quite similar to), but this was a fun and relaxing way to spend an afternoon in Tokyo. I was met at a nearby station by Joei, who is super friendly and easy to chat to. I only wish I hadn't scheduled this for the last day of my trip, because I would've had more opportunities to do other creative classes in Joei's studio! Joei was also kind enough to package my work once it was dry, and mail it to me in Australia. What a fabulous made-it-myself souvenir of my Tokyo visit! Thanks, Joei. :)

Amazing! Who knew I was so creative?

My mum & I were fortunate enough on our last trip to Japan to experience a fantastic afternoon learning the art of Suminagashi. My mum is very creative, so I knew she would love it (and be great at it), however I was amazed at how well I actually did in creating unique pieces too. This was because we had an amazing instructor, Joei!

Joei was fabulous - from her great communication, to her friendliness when she greeted us at the train station, all the way through to her fun-loving nature and encouragement during the delightful class. Joei even mailed our finished pieces to us at our onward hotel in Kyoto. We learnt the Suminagashi basics as well as a few extra advanced tricks, and feel very confident that we can take our new skills home with us.

We highly recommend this Suminagashi Creation class with Joei to anyone and everyone - no matter your skill level, give it a go and you will not be disappointed!
