Ishinomaki is a major seaside city on the Sanriku Coast in Tohoku (North Japan). In March 2011 Ishinomaki suffered significant damage from the powerful earthquake and especially the resulting tsunami. The city's recovery has attracted plenty of attention due to the reliance on local efforts and the miraculous support of all the manga characters associated with the famous Ishinomori Manga Museum. This is a 2-day tour to the beautiful and dramatic Sanriku Coast where you will have the rare opportunity to see how local people join forces to preserve the historical traditions of Ishinomaki while looking forward to a new, brighter future.
In this curious and enlightening tour you will explore the quiet seaside city of Ishinomaki and learn everything about its past and present. You will visit a traditional sake brewery, see how locals live at temporary housings and shopping facilities, ride on a medieval ship, eat delicious seafood, and meet the famous manga characters who protect Ishinomaki with their brave spirits! This is a unique 2-day tour to a real "off-the-beaten-track" destination where you can observe the authentic lifestyle of local people in the Japanese countryside.
The following is the itinerary for the tour:
8:00 - Take the Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo station to Sendai (recommended train - Yamabiko 175), then change to the local Senseki line train to Ishinomaki (recommended train departs Sendai at 10:14 and arrives in Ishinomaki at 11:18).
11:30 - Meet your guide at Ishinomaki station and head towards a classy local restaurant named Takikawa to try fresh seafood delicacies.
12:40 - 13:00 - Visit Ishinomaki's Information Center and get acquainted with the tragic story of the disaster and the persevering recovery efforts.
13:05 - 14:05 - Go to the famous Ishinomori Manga Museum, built as a tribute to the prominent manga author Shotaro Ishinomori, father of classical series such as Cyborg 009, Kamen Rider, Goranger and many others. Learn how anime fans from all over the country helped the city's recovery.
14:15 - 14:45 - Take a look over Ishinomaki from the top of Hiyoriyama Park and see the current stages of the recovery process along the bay
15:10 - 16:20 - Go see San Juan Bautista, a restored European-style sailing ship used for Japanese envoys to the West at the beginning of the Edo period.
16:40 - Check in at the wonderful Hanayubi Hotel in Onagawa Onsen and relax in an open-air hot spring pool overlooking the sea.
9:30 - Get picked up from the hotel and go straight to Hirako Shuzo, Ishinomaki's own sake brewery.
11:35 - 12:00 - Pay a visit to the remains of Kadonowaki Elementary School and learn about the positive outcome of the dramatic events that happened here in March 2011.
12:15 - 13:45 - Go to Ishinomaki's fish market and have lunch with fresh seafood at Saitaro dining hall where locals go for lunch.
14:10 - 14:45 - Visit the temporary shopping facilities built for people who lost their property after the tsunami. Feel the positive hope for the future that locals here have.
15:00 - Do some last-minute shopping of local products and souvenirs at Ishinomaki's tourist center. Even little gestures help the city's people and speed up the recovery process.
15:50 - End the tour at Ishinomaki station. Take the train back to Sendai and change for the Shinkansen bullet train bound for Tokyo (recommended train departs from Sendai station at 17:09 and arrives at Tokyo station at 18:52).
