Chihana is located in Gion, Higashiyama district of Kyoto and can be found along a small passage under a red lantern. When you see the entrance, you immediately get a sense that something special is happening there. Chihana was opened in 1946 and offers kaiseki kappo style cuisine (multi-dish meal served at a counter)
On entering the restaurant, you will notice counter seats for 6 people on the left side and semi-compartment table seats for 4 people on the right. There is a tatami room for 8 people available but a seat at the counter is highly recommended to better enjoy Chihana’s atmosphere and observe the chef at work. The master chef is usually located at the right end of the counter, so it would be good to take a seat near him if possible.
At Chihana, food is served on exquisitely decorative Ko-Imari porcelain, a style of ceramics famed since the Edo period. The cuisine is traditional Kyoto style, passed from generation to generation. Even the counter table is a single piece of wood, several hundred years old. As one can imagine, the sense of history is strong at Chihana, both in the Japanese aesthetic, and in the preparation and serving of delicate, mouth-watering dishes. As the restaurant can only seat 20 people, an advance reservation is necessary.
The chef prepares dishes for each customer, adjusting speed and volume accordingly – a considerate and sensitive approach to his patrons' needs. He also gives his customers a full explanation of the ingredients he uses, as well as preparation and cooking methods. One certainly feels full by the end of an evening at Chihana, unlike some other high end restaurants which do not always provide a satisfying volume of food .
Chihana is open for lunch and in the evening: 12:00 to 14:00, and 17:00 to 22:00. Closed on Tuesdays.
