Key Information

Description

Old Mitsui Family Shimogamo Villa is located on the south side of Shimogamo Shrine— a UNESCO World Heritage site. Reserve this culturally significant property in Kyoto for an unforgettable private dining experience for you and your personal guests. Exclusive to Rakuten Travel Experiences, we have reserved this unique classically elegant Japanese space and arranged a specially prepared meal that allows you and your personal guests to enjoy suitably fine Japanese cuisine served by Shimogamo Saryo, a long-established premier kaiseki restaurant in Kyoto. Enjoy an authentic touch to your meal by being attended to by a nakai— a dedicated waitress at Japanese inns. Before dinner, you can relax in a private tea room that is usually not open to the public. Rakuten Travel Experiences guests will not only get exclusive access to the room but will also be able to enjoy a cup of green tea and traditional Japanese sweets. Established by Hachiroemon Takamine, the 10th head of the Mitsui Kita family (the leading family of all eleven Mitsui families), Old Mitsui Family Shimogamo Villa was home for all the Mitsui families. The Mitsui family built the Akina Reisha Shrine in 1909 to enshrine the spirit of their ancestors on this site. Takamine needed a rest house for family visits to that shrine and thus commissioned this grand residence in 1925. The Mitsui family owned another residence in the Kiyamachi area but relocated that main building to the present location. The Mitsui Family Shimogamo Villa was moved to the country in 1949. From 1951, it served as home to the Kyoto Family Court chief justice until 2007. The main building and residential compounds from the Taisho period (1912-1926) have been maintained in a superb condition and are highly valued as a fine example of a large classical Japanese residence. Old Mitsui Family Shimogamo Villa was designated as an Important Cultural Property in 2011.
