Key Information

Description

Kyoto Aquarium opened on March 14, 2012 as Japan’s first aquarium to entirely use manmade seawater. It is Japan’s largest inland aquarium, featuring 250 species and a total of approximately 15,000 specimens. Its close proximity to Kyoto Station makes it very convenient to visit on your way to our from exploring Kyoto’s many World Heritage Sites. The theme of this aquarium located far from the sea is “life brought together by water.” Besides the ever-popular seal and penguin exhibits, it also offers exciting dolphin shows, as well as unique displays that showcase the aquatic life found in and around Kyoto. Some are themed around the rivers that flow through Kyoto, such as the Kamogawa and Yuragawa Rivers, while others exhibit the sea life found in the waters north of Kyoto Prefecture. There are 12 fascinating areas waiting to be explored inside this large aquarium. Below, we introduce some of the most popular exhibits. The Rivers of Kyoto Two distinct tanks recreate the natural environments of the Kamogawa and Yuragawa Rivers. The star of this exhibit is the Japanese giant salamander, a protected species that is officially designated as a special natural monument of Japan. Here, you can observe the Japanese giant salamander in a realistic recreation of its natural Kyoto river habitat. The Sea of Kyoto There are seven different spots from which to observe this large exhibit, including a grotto area and a fish-eye lens. Enjoy the tranquil sight of Kyoto’s diverse sea life as fish and other marine creatures peacefully pass by. Gourmets will appreciate the chance to see fish such as the daggertooth pike conger and tilefish, important to Kyoto’s cuisine. Penguins This exhibit features Cape penguins, a species found in the relatively warm waters along Africa’s southern coastline. The penguins come right up to the glass, giving visitors a great close-up view. At the Penguin Skywalk, you can see the underside of the penguins’ feet as they pitter-patter overhead! Dolphin Stadium The Stadium offers unobstructed 180° views of Kyoto’s natural scenery as it changes throughout the seasons. This becomes the backdrop for dynamic daily performances featuring bottlenose dolphins leaping for joy. Shows include not only the dolphins and trainers, but also circus performers. The theatrical, story-driven performances offer a completely fresh take on the traditional dolphin show. There is even time to meet the performers before and after each show! The Beauty of Nature With an emphasis on conservation, this exhibit showcases the history and beauty of Kyoto’s aquatic environments and rare creatures. While observing the unique species of habitats such as Yuragawa River and Lake Biwa, learn about what we can do to protect these animals and their homes. As this aquarium is an extremely popular attraction, customers buying tickets on the day may be faced with long queues during peak times. By booking in advance, you can guarantee yourself stress-free entry!
