Key Information

Description

This winter, see the Asahiyama Zoo Penguin Walk until mid-March! While the winter snows last, this charming event lets you see the penguins exercise on a 500-meter walking course and build up their strength. Held twice daily at 11:00 and 14:30 until March, then daily at 11:00 until the snow subsides. Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, is Japan’s northernmost zoological garden, and one of its most popular. In particular, it’s known for its cold-climate animals, like polar bears, penguins, Scops owls, and Amur leopards. It was the first facility in Japan to successfully breed such animals, and is now host to some species that only exist in captivity. The layout and design of the zoo are based on showing the animals’ natural behaviors. Enclosures are designed to allow guests to observe animals close-up, using clear domes and tunnels. This allows enclosures to be built in ways that mirror the animals’ natural habitats. It also means that you can watch penguins soar overhead in special tunnels, get close to big cats as they climb around and above you, and see polar bears from a seal’s-eye perspective. Asahiyama Zoo was one of the first to organize a “penguin walk.” In the winter months, you can watch the birds march along the snow-covered ground once per day. It’s the closest most of us will get to these animals. Purchase Asahiyama Zoo tickets online with Rakuten Travel Experiences to earn or use Rakuten Points!
