Description
Wara village in Gifu prefecture is one of the most picturesque hidden rural places in Japan. Located in a valley between the mountains that separate Gujo and Gero cities, Wara has the atmosphere of unspoiled rural beauty that will fascinate the hearts of all visitors. In this village you can not only see nostalgic images of a pastoral landscape, but you can actively interact with the friendly locals and engage in many seasonal activities. Your visit to Wara will be unlike any other experience in Japan and you will have the true opportunity to discover rural life in its most genuine form!
Below is the list of seasonal activities you can enjoy in Wara. Please note that you can do only the activity listed under the period of your visit:
April 1 - June 9: Cycling around Wara's highlights (which include a brilliant Buddhist Temple with the village's treasure - a legendary demon skull, a spiritual Shinto shrine with unique rock formations, local shops, a small museum of folklore, and more)
June 10 - June 25: Firefly watching in the forest
June 26 - July 31: Cycling around Wara's highlights (see above)
August 1 - August 30: Riverside fun and salamander watching
September 1 - September 30: Cycling around Wara's highlights (see above)
October 1 - October 31: Harvesting local vegetables and eating them
November 1 - March 31: Practicing nose flute playing with local people
The starting time is either 10:00 or 13:00, except for the firefly watching which starts from 19:00. Each activity takes about 2 hours to complete.
Note: For an additional 2000 JPY per person the local people will prepare a delicious lunch for you!
You can reach Wara village by bus from Gujo city. Alternatively, you can reach it by changing two buses from Hida-Kanayama village as well.

The activity may be cancelled in case of stormy weather or flooding rivers.
