My name is Made and I was born in Payangan, a famous wood carving village, where I started carving wood at the age of 14.
I come from a family of farmers, and planted everything from bananas, chillis, durians, cocoa, cloves, and vanilla to rice until I moved to Sanur in 2003, nearby to my cousin Putu who often comes over.

I am passionate about wood carving, landscaping, building and love swimming with my young son Kadek around my house or on Sanur beach. I jog every morning to relax and keep in shape because I eat all day (a Balinese tradition!). I have been a tour guide for 10 years and love meeting people from all around the world.

One of my favourite things to do is bring guests to my hometown, where I can show them where I grew up and where my heart resides.

    Brilliant time!

Me and my husband have just done the wood carving today with Made and we throughly enjoyed our experience from start to finish! Made was very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble! we learnt the skills required to make our own wood carvings and soon realised how hard this is and what skill is required in doing this! But we have it ago! Would defiantly recommend!

It was a fun experience and Made - our teacher has a very happy family.

But the wood carving workshop is in a very uncomfortable position, like very uncomfortable. Im asian so sitting down and close legs are quite familiar to me - but it still give me pain afterward, my european friend is completely need a back massage in the end.

It was fun, but it can be better with more preparation, a table, a chair, something to keep the wood still when you carve, more sample of style (we have only 2 options), light?

The instruction was not very clear as well...

Balinese art style is very appealing to me. Immediately after coming here I got interested in stone and wood carving. But as a person with two left hands, I thought - leave it to the masters. Then I met Made. He showed me that, while the real stuff should be left to people like him, anyone can do something simple. If given good guidance. And Made was a great techer indeed. Before I realized it, I was carving a small lizard! Thank you Made!

    Wonderful, unique experience!

This is definitely a very unique experience, Made is extremely welcoming and happy to teach and we loved learning. We ended up liking it so much we bought a set of tools to continue working at home! Very worth it, it's a nice, calm way to spend an afternoon and you end up with a new skill!

It was interesting to do woodcarving as the Balinese would. I enjoyed my time.

This was an eye opening experience. You really see the time, expertise and skill a carver devotes to their craft. We really appreciated Made's instructions and he also let us do quite a bit on our own too. We enjoyed sitting in his home, on his floor and using our foot as a "Bali clamp" to see what carvers in Bali do for real. We will treasure our creations as a memory of our trip and thanks to Made for helping us finish them off more professionally!
